COMPREHENSION WITH SPANISH YOUNG LEARNERS OF ENGLISH
Dolores Ramírez Verdugo and Isabel Alonso Belmonte
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain)
Summary
This article reviews a study the effects of digital stories on the listening comprehension of a group of 220 six-year-old students from a various schools of Madrid. A quasi-experimental test was used for this research. Besides a pre-test was desgined in order to know the real results of the treatment. It was possible to see that the experimental performed better than the control group in the test administrated at the end of th study.
As an introduction the article remarks the importance of listening in second language acquisition. Emphasizing the fact that in early ages stories can offer a good way to introduce kids the new language. Due to the fact that the new technologies can help to make the listenings activities more realistic it is believed that this can develop the children’s listening skills.
In order to carry out the study, the students were exposed to treatment for two sesions of 45 minutes per week. Another important feature was the fact that the students could not be assigned ramdon to the different groups (control and experimental), because of the arregment that were made according to the academic year by the school authorities. To proove the hypothesis it was necessary to analyse the information through the program SPSS.
In order to introduce the new technology to classroom the researchers worked with digital stories from Kindersite.
When the kids sit the pre-test there were no significant in the results. However, we saw remarkable differences in the post-test. The experimental group improved their listening skills, because the computers helps students to focus on their tasks. Besides, this kind of activity gives student feedback, which is very important in language learning.
As conclusion, they say we need to create new activities that leads student to a better understanding of what they are learning.
Comment
I think that this article is a good tool to understand what happens when a new strategy is applied to a group. We not only have meaningful results but also we can learn what are the real interest of our students.
This article shows that now-a-days the pieces of technolgy are getting the students attention, since they focus on what they have to do. Besides, through this activities students are able to see what is happening and not just imagining while they are listening from a radio.
According to the test, the students tend to be more motivated when they have to work on the net.
I really like the idea of getting my future students attention through technology, due to the globalization and the current life that people are living. I think that this ways of working will be more and more used.
